Sleep Testing (Polysomnography and MSLT)

If you would like to have your patient undergo Polysomnography without or prior to consultation, you will be asked to fill out a Polysomnography Request form with basic clinical information and fax this with a copy of demographic and insurance information.  Our staff will contact your patient to arrange the Sleep Study, and you should receive a final copy of the testing results within 7 days.
Studies that may be ordered include:
  1. Overnight Polysomnography includes EEG, EMG, oximetry, airflow, chest wall and abdominal wall movement, position sensors, leg movement sensors.
  2. CPAP Titration Study for patients already diagnosed with sleep disordered breathing, an entire night study as above with application of nasal CPAP, education by technician, and report indicating optimal CPAP pressures.  Bilevel pressure will be used if necessary.  PLEASE NOTE: We will not order CPAP from a Durable Medical Equipment Provider for your patient unless we are seeing him/her in consultation.
  3. Split Night Study for patients thought very likely to have sleep apnea or in whom a diagnosis and treatment is urgent.  If the initial two hours of a standard polysomnogram show clear evidence of severe apnea, the patient may be treated with CPAP on the remainder of the night.  If not, the technician wil procede with a standard study.
  4. Multiple Sleep Latency Testing is a daytime study involving multiple naps, generally immediately following an overnight polysomnogram to assess daytime sleepiness.  This is a standard test for narcolepsy.
